Vegan Falafel Battered Onion Rings

As celebrity chef Anne Burrell says all the time “Brown food tastes good!” That crisp and crunch of biting into succulent and savory fried foods, like onion rings, can not be beaten in my humble opinion.

The idea for combining two very popular fried foods came suddenly as Devorah and I were planning for Chanukah content. We thought how can we take a simple classic fried food like onion rings and bring it to the next level. Then BAM! It hit me! Falafel + Onion Rings = Match Made In Heaven!

Brown food tastes good!!

It is the garlicky warm falafel taste enveloping a soft and sweet onion ring. These are also extremely easy to make. You mix up the batter, dunk the onion, and fry. I was able to whip up a batch of these in less than an hour, including all the frying.

Onion Rings Tips and Tricks

Here are some frying tips to help you with not just this recipe but anything you may want to stick in bubbling oil.

  1. Always add a piece of carrot to the pan to prevent the oil from burning. The carrot absorbs all the burned bits leaving your oil clear for all the batches.
  2. This one may be a duh moment for some but never wear anything you care about near bubbling oil. If you have no choice, then at least wear an apron. If it gets on you, chances are your clothes are stained forever.
  3. Keep an eye on the temperature of your oil. If it gets too hot, your food with be burnt on the outside and raw in the middle. However, if it is too cold, and your food will absorb the oil and be overly greasy.
  4. Last but certainly not least, frying is not as scary as it may seem. Just keep your fingers clear of the oil and invest in a good pair of tongs!

Happy Frying!!
